The GPA is calculated by taking the grade points earned in each course, multiplying them by the number of credits the course is worth, adding all those products together, and then dividing by the total number of credits taken.
For example, if a student has three courses with grades A (4.0), B (3.0), and C (2.0) in 3-credit courses:
GPA = (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 3) + (2.0 × 3) ÷ (3 + 3 + 3) = 3.0
While the 4.0 scale is the most common, some schools use weighted scales to give extra points for honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These scales may go up to 5.0 or even 6.0.
